Imports of R22 air conditioners were prohibited in India from 2015, but local production of R22 models is exempted until January 2025. Although window-type room air conditioners (RACs) were dominant in the local RAC market until several years ago, most window units excluding a minor replacement demand have been replaced already with wall-mounted type split units.
In January 2014, Daikin Airconditioning India (DAIPL) launched local production and sales of R32 split units. Then, Fujitsu General and Mitsubishi Electric launched sales of such models imported from their Thai factories shortly. Furthermore, Haier, Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning, and LG as well as the major local brands such as Blue Star, Lloyd, and Voltas also successively launched local production of R32 split units. In 2021, the penetration of R32 models is estimated to have reached about 80% in the split-type RAC market.
