Imports of R22 air conditioners were prohibited in India from 2015, but local production of R22 units is exempted until January 2025. Although window-type room air conditioners (RACs) were dominant in the local RAC market until several years ago, most window units have been rapidly replaced with wall-mounted type split units.
In 2013, Daikin launched local production of R32 split units. Then, Fujitsu General and Mitsubishi Electric launched sales of such models imported from their Thai factories shortly thereafter. Furthermore, Haier, Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning, and LG as well as the major local brands such as Blue Star, Lloyd, and Voltas also launched local production of R32 split units one after another. In 2020, the penetration of R32 units is estimated to have reached more than 50% in the split-type RAC market.
