Imports of air conditioners using R22 were prohibited in India from 2015, but local production of R22 models is exempted until January 2025. In 2019, the proportion of R22 models is estimated to be about 20% in the split-type room air conditioner (RAC) market which is dominated by foreign brands, but still more than 50% in the window-type RAC market which is dominated by local manufacturers. However, the proportion of window units has dropped to about 10% in the entire RAC market due to a rapid shift to the split type.
