1. Nineteen Organizations Urge EC to Publish Heat Pump Action Plan
On January 22, 2024, a coalition of 19 organizations, including industry associations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), consumer groups, and think tanks, issued an urgent call to European Commission (EC) president von der Leyen. The Heat Pump Action Plan, initially to be published during the first quarter of 2024, will not be published until after the European Union (EU) elections to be held in June. The 19 organizations warn that this delay threatens Europe’s energy transition.

2. Four More Companies Advance in DOE Heat Pump
On January 8, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that four additional heat pump manufacturers had produced heat pump prototypes that successfully passed the laboratory testing phase of the DOE’s Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge. The prototypes will now move to the next phase of the project, where they will be tested in the field. The four companies are Bosch, Daikin, Johnson Controls, and Midea. They are joining Carrier, Lennox International, Rheem, and Trane Technologies, whose prototypes previously passed to the field testing phase.

3. Various Approaches to Low-GWP Refrigerants Released at Kobe Symposium
During the International Symposium on New Refrigerants and Environmental Technology held in Kobe (abbreviated as Kobe Symposium), organized by Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA) in November 2023, JARN interviewed Chemours, Koura, and Honeywell, leading global refrigerant manufacturers in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry, to ask about their efforts to shift to low-global warming (GWP) potential alternatives.

4. China’s Air Conditioner Market Increases by 7.5% in 2023
According to the latest AVC statistics, the resumption of external economic orders, along with advanced brand promotions and scorching weather conditions, resulted in the centralized release of accumulated demand combined with emergency demand in the first half of 2023, leading to a 19.5% sales value increase. Entering the third quarter, the Chinese market presented relatively big growth pressure thanks to a high base in the same period and an overdraw of earlier demand, causing a market decline of 15.7% year on year. For the whole of 2023, the air conditioner market had a sales value of RMB 211.7 billion (about US$ 29.55 billion), growing by 7.5% year on year; with a sales volume that reached 60.85 million units, a rise of 6.5% year on year.

5. Daikin to Launch VRV 7 Series VRF Systems Adopting R32
On January 18, 2024, Daikin announced that it will launch variable refrigerant volume (VRV) 7 series variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems in November 2024 that realize the industry’s top-level energy-saving performance by strengthening seven features required by air conditioning equipment, for example, adopting low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant R32 that is excellent in environmental adaptability and energy savings and in improving basic performance, and also contributes to reducing the environmental burden and the workload.
