1. World Chiller and Air-side Equipment Market 2022 - OVERVIEW
According to JARN’s database, worldwide chiller demand in 2022 approached US$ 8.84 billion, up 0.2% compared with 2021. The major chiller markets are China, Europe, and the United States, accounting for 31.7, 19.7, and 17.2% of the world market, respectively. Global demand for air-side equipment increased by 5.2% from 2021 to US$ 8.20 billion.

2. NORTH AMERICA - United States
The U.S. economy and the chiller market recovered from the pandemic in 2022-2023, growing by 2.1% and US$ 1.48 billion, respectively. The chiller market was driven by construction spending in the non-residential sector, especially in the commercial and manufacturing segments. The air conditioning equipment price hikes due to inflation. The U.S. market is dominated by centralized air conditioning systems based on chillers and air-side equipment, such as air handling units (AHUs) and fan coil units (FCUs). The AHU market size exceeded that of chillers, reaching US$ 2.1 billion in 2022.

3. CHINA
Chinese chiller and air-side markets faced a difficult situation in 2022. JARN estimates that the Chinese chiller market has recorded US$ 2.80 billion in 2022, showing a 2.3% year-on-year decrease. The air-side market is estimated to have decreased by 3.0% year on year to US$ 985.4 million in 2022.

4. EUROPE
In 2022, the European market for chillers with capacities above 50 kW maintained stable year-on-year growth of 11%, reaching more than €1.65 billion (about US$ 1.74 billion). The positive evolution was supported mainly by air-cooled chillers that increased by 14% compared with 2021. Meanwhile, water-cooled units recorded a slight 1% year-on year dip. As a result, the share of air-cooled chillers in total European sales slightly increased to 80% in 2022.

Toshiba Carrier became a part of Carrier last summer. About a year later, JARN interviewed Toru Kubo, president, Toshiba Carrier to hear about the company’s chiller business and positive changes during that time.
