1. Daikin to Establish a New AC Production Base, Its First in Japanese Capital Region
On August 2, 2023, Daikin announced that it has decided to acquire land in Tsukubamirai City, Ibaraki Prefecture, to establish a new production base for air conditioners in the capital region of Japan. With its investment of about ¥20 billion (about US$ 140 million), the company will establish Tsukuba Plant (tentative name), a new production base for air conditioners covering an area of about 98,000 m2 in Ken-O Expressway Interpark Tsukubamirai.

2. European ATW Heat Pump Market Slows Down Temporarily
Air-to-water (ATW) heat pumps have seen rapid growth in Europe over the past few years. However, the price hikes due to inflation combined with the decrease in gas prices and the reduction in subsidies seem to be reducing consumer appetite for ATW heat pumps this year. In addition, in the housing market, which adopts ATW heat pumps, the number of construction starts dropped, affected by rising interest rates and prices. Moreover, in some regions such as Eastern Europe, the accumulation of inventory in distribution channels dampened demand.

3. EPA Issues Final Rule for HFC Allowances
On July 11, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final rule on its methodology for allocating hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) production and consumption allowances for the calendar years 2024 to 2028, as part of the United States’ HFC phasedown implementation. Allowances for calendar year 2024 will be announced by October 1, 2023.

4. GMCC Creates Unprecedented Solutions with Its Technology
Guangdong Meizhi Compressor (GMCC), a Midea group company, offers its compressors for the global heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry, from 11 factories in Shunde and Hefei in China, India, etc. It is not an exaggeration to say that about half of rotary compressors sold in the world are from GMCC. JARN interviewed Fu Yongjun, chairman of GMCC, to hear about GMCC’s development in global markets.

5. AC Exports Drop by 1.5% in the First Half of the Year
The General Administration of Customs announced that, from January to June 2023, China saw its air conditioner export volume amount to 31.67 million units, a decline of 1.5% year on year; the total export value came to RMB 34.17 billion (about US$ 4.77 billion), rising by 0.4% year on year. However, the high-temperature seasons in June and July, combined with the El Nino phenomenon that has led to high summer temperatures across many regions, has had a significant impact on air conditioner exports.
