The Energy Department Can Help Cities and States Steer Existing Buildings to Net Zero

Decarbonizing existing buildings will be challenging but necessary to meet the country's goal of net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. Building performance standards established in Boston and Maryland show a path forward. A new Department of Energy (DOE) grant program under the Inflation Reduction Act could help states and municipalities develop and implement similar building performance standards to ramp down emissions from existing buildings over time.
