5. Musings on HVAC&R - Heat Pumps and Heating Capacity
Many technological developments have been made in order to improve the heating capacity of heat pumps at low outside temperatures, which tended to be their main disadvantage. In 1982, an inverter-driven heat pump was developed. This heat pump used a compressor with increased operating frequency of 90 Hz or higher compared with the conventional 50/60 Hz, to increase the number of revolutions and greatly increase the heating capacity of heat pumps. Currently, compressors operate with a maximum frequency of 120 to 150 Hz. Inverter heat pumps greatly improved the annual performance factor (APF) by changing the heating capacity according to the heating load.
