1. World Air Conditioner Market – 2022, OVERVIEW
The hot weather arrived relatively late in the northern hemisphere, with heavy rainfall in parts of Europe and Asia. However, since June, heat waves have hit the United States, Europe, and other regions. China’s summer came late, after July, and the continuous widespread high-temperature weather made up for the market downturn in the first half of 2022. JARN estimates that the global room air conditioner (RAC) market in 2022 decreased by 0.4% compared with 2021, reaching 125.62 million units.

2. United States
Compared with 2021, summer 2022 in the United States was not particularly hot, especially since the summer on the east coast came very late, and the peak season sales were not as good as 2021. JARN speculates that the window unit market fell by 25.4% to 7.60 million units.  According to shipment data from AHRI, from January to October 2022, the total shipment volume of unitary air conditioners increased from 8.90 million units in the same period of 2021 to 9.07 million units, an increase of 1.9%.

3. China
According to JARN’s estimates, the Chinese RAC market decreased 5.1% year on year to 47.7 million units in 2022. In 2022, Chinese RAC market showed an overall downward trend, due to many adverse factors such as repeated pandemic waves, economic and consumer confidence downturns, rising costs, production disruptions, and channel changes. Regarding exports, in the period spanning January to September 2022, China’s RAC exports, including window units, portable units, and single-split units, reached about 52 million units, indicating a year-on-year decrease of 3 to 4%, according to data from China Customs.

4. India
The Indian air conditioner market witnessed sharp growth during the first half of 2022, and is expected to end the year with an all-time high of approximately 5.8 million units. The early arrival of summer along with an intense heat wave that swept across the country and the pent-up demand from the two summer seasons in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic led to a jump in demand during the period March to May 2022.
