5. Musings on HVAC&R - Preventing Refrigerant Leakage Is Not Easy
Refrigerant leaks are a bothersome issue and are not easy to prevent. Refrigerants leak in HVAC&R
equipment at various stages, such as during manufacturing, installation, operation, and disposal. The refrigerant recovery rate in Japan is about 40% and improvement is desirable. In Japan, half of the 60% unrecovered rate is due to a lack of fluorocarbon recovery when disposing of equipment or demolishing
buildings. Promotional activities are needed to raise the awareness of the companies involved and to increase the recovery rate.
