Commercial real estate service provider JLL has released the U.S. grocery store tracker report 2020, which shows that grocers saw extraordinary sales growth in 2020 as households were in lockdown and dining out became impossible for many. The year was marked by unexpected changes: reduced spending at restaurants provided outsized gains to grocery stores that will be hard to outpace in the coming years; stay-at-home orders and public health concerns caused demand for online grocery orders for pick-up and delivery to soar. That demand has accelerated grocers’ plans for ecommerce adoption; most grocers slowed or halted store expansions while capital was funneled into developing and improving online ordering platforms.
Unlike convenience retailers in Japan, the vast majority of convenience retailers in the United States are colocated with gas stations.
