1. World ATW Heat Pump Market – 2020
In 2020, air-to-water (ATW) heat pump manufacturers were affected to a varying extent by plant closures and supply chain disruptions due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Heat pump manufacturing outputs quickly returned to pre-pandemic levels in China, Europe, and Japan, which are major markets and production bases. Thanks to subsidy policies for renewable energy, the major ATW heat pump markets have continued to maintain growth except in China. According to JARN’s database, the global ATW market in 2020 decreased by 4.1% compared with 2019, reaching 3.28 million units. Among individual markets, Europe, Japan, and the United States increased by 8.2%, 2.9%, and 2.1% respectively, and China decreased by 9.7%.

2. Europe
JARN estimates that the European ATW heat pump market reached 669,000 units in 2020, growing by 8.2% compared with 2019. According to Energy Technologies Perspectives (ETP) by International Energy Agency (IEA), the proportion of heating equipment sales accounted for by heat pumps will almost triple by 2030 and will continue to grow thereafter.

3. Japan
Japan’s ATW heat pump market in 2020 reached 524,859 units, up 2.9% from 2019. As of March 2021, the cumulative domestic sales volume in Japan has reached 7.46 million units. The government’s goal is to sell 14 million units by 2030. According to the current increasing trend, this goal can be reached.

4. China
Affected by the pandemic in early 2020, China’s real economy has been significantly dampened; in recent years, with dwindling subsidies in various localities, China’s ATW market has declined. According to JARN estimates, the total ATW market has fallen by 9.7%, and the total number of ATW systems used for heating in China has dropped to 1.94 million units.

5. The United States
In 2020, the U.S. market scale of ATW cylinder-integrated heat pump models was 102,800 units. Monobloc- or split-type ATW heat pumps are not very common in the U.S. market. The annual sales volume of the residential water heater market is large with 8 to 10 million units, while the share of HPWHs in the U.S. market is small.
