Since 1985, with the discovery of the hole in the ozone and the subsequent Montreal Protocol that banned CFC gases responsible for environmental damage, the issue of refrigerants has also become central to the design and production of air conditioning units. The 1997 Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing global warming, and subsequent national and international standards enacted to limit polluting emissions, gave a further boost to the search for green solutions for technological systems as well.
