1. Japanese AC Manufacturers Fight against Strong Headwinds
Although the impact of lockdowns was severe in the first quarter of FY 2020, Japanese AC Manufacturers have been gradually recovering since then. According to the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA), Japanese domestic shipments of split-type RACs in FY 2020 reached the highest level since 1972, when statistics began, and exceeded 10 million units. The Japanese RAC market continues to perform well this year, with domestic shipments in the three months spanning January to March 2021 reaching approximately 2.2 million units, showing a double-digit increase of 11.8% compared with the same period in 2020.

2. MCE Live+Digital Successfully Held in Context of Buoyant Italian HVAC&R Market
Mostra Convegno Expocomfort (MCE) was held as Live+Digital 2021, the first exclusively digital edition, from April 8 to 9 and its digital experience was extended to April 10 to 16. Backed up by Italy’s double-digit growth in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry this year, MCE Live+Digital 2021 was a great success. Over 290 companies and brands from 21 countries introduced about 800 products. Nearly 35,000 visitors worldwide attended MCE Live+Digital, and 38% of the professionals who participated came from 116 overseas countries, with a robust presence from Turkey, Germany, Spain, and Greece.

3. JCI Brings Hitachi Horizontal Scroll Compressors to North America
On May 3, 2021, Johnson Controls (JCI) announced a partnership with its joint venture (JV) company, Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning, to offer wide-scale distribution of its industry recognized lineup of Hitachi horizontal scroll compressors in North America. This offering aligns the innovative Hitachi scroll compressors with the strength of Penn, a brand from JCI backed by more than a century of commercial refrigeration expertise. As a result, the ZS and DS series horizontal scroll compressors are now available to North American-based refrigeration equipment manufacturers through JCI’s sales representative.

4. AC Manufacturers in India Expect High Growth
Leading air conditioner manufacturers are betting on high growth this year even as they are firming up plans to increase the prices of room air conditioners (RACs) by 5 to 8% this summer. Leading players like Daikin, Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning, Voltas, Blue Star, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, and Haier expect a high double-digit growth, due to the pent-up demand, sweltering summer, and continuance of work-from-home which are expected to create demand for additional cooling products.

5. Carrier to Acquire Giwee Group, a Chinese HVAC Manufacturer
On April 19, 2021, Carrier announced that it has signed agreements to acquire Guangdong Giwee Group (Giwee Group) and its subsidiaries, including Guangdong Chigo Heating and Ventilation Equipment (GCHV). Giwee Group’s proven strength in the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) and light commercial market in China will expand Carrier’s access to this growing, global market. The global market for VRF and light commercial HVAC equipment is expected to reach approximately US$ 20 billion by 2025, growing at one of the highest rates in the HVAC segment. The acquisition will support Carrier’s growth strategy of strengthening and growing our core, increasing product extensions and geographic coverage and growing services and digital to create recurring sales opportunities.
