According to JARN’s database, based on outdoor units, the global VRF market has decreased by 3.4% from 2019 to 1.80 million units. China, Japan, and South Korea are the world’s three major VRF markets as well as global production bases. These three markets account for 76% of the global market.

2. China
In 2020, China’s VRF market including residential and commercial systems grew by 2.2% year on year, with a total sales volume of 1.10 million units. Within this market, the mini-VRF segment grew by about 5%. VRFs account for almost half of the entire commercial air conditioning market in China. Affected by the pandemic in the first half of 2020, many projects were suspended, and sales of VRFs suffered a double-digit decrease year on year. With the gradual recovery of the market in the second half of the year, VRF sales increased substantially.

3. USA
Total sales of VRFs and mini- VRFs decreased by about 7.1% to 63,900 units. Demand for top discharge type VRFs with capacities of 6 tons or more, which are categorized for commercial use, decreased significantly, affected by the cancellation, delay, and reduction of projects by the owners who install the equipment, difficulty in securing installation workers, and disruption of the supply chain. On the other hand, demand for side discharge type or mini-VRFs primarily for residential use expanded, benefiting from buoyant housing sales thanks to a historic decline in long-term mortgage rates.

4. EUROPE
Looking at the European VRF market in 2020, the VRF market in almost all European countries has declined to various degrees. Demand for VRFs in Europe, including mini-VRFs, has dropped by about 8.8%, reaching 162,000 units. Sales of mini-VRFs and multi-splits are more buoyant than sales of commercial VRF systems, which account for part of the market decline.

5. JAPAN
In 2020, not only the EHP market was severely hit by the pandemic, but the special demand for GHP in schools also ceased. Along with the stagnation of economic activity, demand for VRF systems dropped rapidly and drastically. The VRF market in Japan in 2020 decreased by 10.8% compared with 2019, reaching 142,300 units.
