1. Maximum Safety Thanks to ENGIE Refrigeration’s Quantum Chillers
ENGIE Refrigeration has received a major order: NTT’s Global Data Centers Division (formerly
e-shelter) is a long-term customer and has ordered another 12 Quantum chillers. NTT has been relying on products and services provided by ENGIE Refrigeration for many years and has now placed another major order. It comprises 12 water-cooled Quantum chillers, all of which had been delivered by the end of 2020 and will now be operated at a site in Germany.

2. Updates on Natural Refrigerants Virtually Presented at GL2020
On December 7 to 9, 2020, the 14th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants, GL2020, was organized by International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR) and Japan Society of Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (JSRAE) as a virtual event for the first time in its history. During the three-day conference, total of 198 people from 24 countries attended, presenting 105 papers, according to the GL2020 secretariat. With the virtual format, the number of published papers decreased to 70% of the number presented at the previous conference. By country, Europe led with 70% of the published papers, followed by Japan with 18%, and also the United States and China. These presentations focused on eight themes: cycle analysis; components and processes; systems; sorption; properties; applications; technology implementation; and regulations. The most prominent theme was CO2 refrigerant, accounting for about 40% of the total papers.

3. Kulthorn Kirby Starts Production of Bristol Compressors in Thailand
On September 10 2020, Kulthorn Kirby (KKC) officially commenced production of Bristol compressors.
The production range at the new plant covers the A, B, G, and J series of Bristol reciprocating compressors from 1.5 to 25 hp for air conditioning, from 9,000 to 287,400 BTU/h for heat pump applications, and from 5,200 to 40,100 BTU/h for commercial refrigeration products. In addition, KKC will start production of G series from late 2021.

4. China to Build 14,000 Cold Chain Logistics Facilities
In December 2020, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MOA) stated that, in order to strengthen the construction of modern agricultural infrastructure, the central government had allocated RMB 5 billion (US$ 766 million) in 2020. This fund allowed the construction of cold chain logistics facilities for the storage and preservation of agricultural products. The project was projected to have benefitted more than 9,000 new agricultural business entities and newly constructed or rebuilt 14,000 storage and preservation cold chain logistics facilities, with a scale of more than 6 million tons.

5. Toshiba Carrier’s World’s First Inverter ACs Honored as IEEE Milestone
Toshiba Carrier announced that the world’s first inverter split air conditioners that the company developed and mass produced for commercial and residential applications in 1980 and 1981, respectively, have been recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as an IEEE Milestone for the historic significance of the achievement in electrical and electronics fields.
