1. HVAC&R Industry Contributing to Green Recovery
1. During Chillventa eSpecial held from October 13 to 15, 2020 as a special online version in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Partnership for Energy and the Environment (EPEE) and the Association of European Refrigeration Component Manufacturers (ASERCOM) joined forces, as in the past 10 years, and held a virtual symposium. The HVAC&R industry has the potential to make a significant contribution to this Green Recovery initiative by improving the energy-saving performance of equipment, shifting to lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants, and using renewable energy such as heat pumps. At this EPEE and ASERCOM symposium, many reports and proposals were made in line with these efforts.

2. Daikin Sees Cool Opportunity for India as AC Manufacturing Hub
Daikin has expanded rapidly over the past decade in India, overtaking the more established competitors, with the help of local production, robust distribution, local research and development (R&D), and the Air Conditioning Technology Development Centre (ACDC) for skill development. By the end of 2020, it plans to expand its sales and distribution networks to more than 10,000 locations across the sub-continent.

3. Carrier AquaForce 30GXV Now Available with Water-side Economizer
On October 27, 2020, Carrier announced the availability of an innovative water-side economizer option for its award-winning AquaForce 30XV air-cooled variable-speed screw chiller. The addition of a water-side economizer, or ‘free cooling,’ allows the owner to take advantage of lower outdoor air temperatures to cool their building or process, thus saving a significant amount of energy.

4. China AC Sales Value Falls by 18.2% in RY 2020
According to All View Cloud (AVC) statistics, total sales of air conditioners in China amounted to RMB 160 billion (US$ 23.8 billion) in 2020 refrigeration year (RY, end of August 2020), falling by 18.2% year on year. In the past two or three years, facing a sliding market scale, air conditioner brands have faced intensified competition, and a far-reaching price war has broken out. Leading brands have tried to seize greater market shares with lower priced products. This price war and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in a double-digit sales drop for air conditioners in RY 2020.

5. Navigating Changing EU Requirements When Using Flammable Refrigerants
According to the EU F-Gas Regulation, by 2021 emissions of fluorinated gases (F-gases) must be halved compared with 2015 emissions and reduced by approximately 80% by 2030. However, the less climate-damaging gases pose new problems because most are flammable or toxic. UL supports customers throughout the process for European Conformity (CE) marking with advisory, training, documents of conformity and certification for all required directives of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) products that use flammable refrigerants.
