1. NEC and NTT Communications Develop World’s First Data Center Cooling System Using New Refrigerant in Japan
NEC and NTT Communications have developed and jointly tested a cooling system that uses R1224yd refrigerant for air conditioning of communications equipment in data centers. The results of their tests demonstrate that the new cooling system is able to reduce air conditioning power consumption by half compared with existing cooling systems.

2. GEA Sells Bock to Nord Holding
As part of its continued focus on strategic core markets, Düsseldorf-based technology group GEA is selling the compressor manufacturer Bock, which is in GEA’s Refrigeration Technologies division, to Nord Holding. The purchase agreement was signed on September 21, 2020. The parties have agreed not to disclose the financial details of the transaction. The transaction remains subject to regulatory clearance. Closing of the transaction is expected in early 2021.

3. IFA 2020 Organized as Special Edition
This year’s IFA had 150 companies presenting their ideas on site, joined by an additional 1,350 exhibitors from 30 countries in the IFA Xtended Space and the IFA Virtual Market Place. Even though IFA Xtended Space opened its virtual doors just a couple of days before the IFA 2020 Special Edition opened, more than 78,000 people followed the IFA 2020 Special Edition online, generating 262,000 views – watching the keynote and press conferences, following panel discussions, and exploring virtual product demonstrations.

4. China’s Rotary Compressor Exports Drop in RY 2020
By export destination, Asia was the only continent to achieve positive growth in refrigeration year 2020 (RY 2020 ending July 2020), with exports of 23.43 million units, a year-on-year increase of 0.7%. Europe was down by 6.4% year on year, affected by the pandemic and the rapidly deteriorating economic context. North America fell by more than 20% year on year, due to the rising costs of air conditioning compressors imported from China under increased tariff conditions, in addition to the impact of the epidemic.
