1. IEC Proposes Raising HC Charges in RACs
International Electro technical Commission (IEC) working group proposed a new safety standard, which is vital to maximizing emission reductions from a global phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) under the Montreal Protocol’s Kigali Amendment. Most common air conditioners sold today contain refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) thousands of times that of CO2, while this standard would allow greater use of flammable refrigerants such as propane (R290) with GWPs close to zero. Member countries represented on the IEC’s sub-committee 61D will have from now until October 30 to vote on the proposal.
