COVID-19 Reduces Emissions? According to the World Meteorological Organization ( WMO), the lockdowns imposed in many countries around the world to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, caused greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the burning of fossil fuels to fall by an average of 8% during the three months from February to April 2020. The largest decrease recorded was 17%, reducing GHG emissions to the level recorded in 2006.
