-Review of the Global AC Market in the First Half of 2020-
1 Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia was seriously affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in March to May, which is the peak
period for RAC sales. Accordingly, the Southeast Asian RAC market scale in the first half of 2020 is estimated to have decreased by 36% year on year. In April in particular, many dealers were forced to close due to measures against COVID-19, and air conditioner sales fell sharply. However, since May, markets have been recovering in countries that have gradually relaxed regulations.

2 Europe
Lockdowns across Europe have had a significant impact on the European air conditioner market since early spring this year. However, after May, the activities of retailers resumed and the market is gradually recovering. Some manufacturers have increased their online sales. Demand for RACs was pushed up by increasing purchases of RACs by increasingly large numbers of teleworkers for their homes and by a temporary rise in temperatures in mid-May.

3 The United States
According to Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), shipments of unitary air conditioners during the period spanning January to May 2020 decreased by 7.1% to 2,101,664 units, down from 2,262,364 units shipped during the same period in 2019. The U.S. RAC market in the first half of 2020 is estimated to have decreased by 26%. This summer has tended to be relatively hot compared with last year, which may underpin RAC demand in the summer.

4 India
COVID-19 started making its impact on sales from March. April and May hardly saw any sales due to the severe lockdown. The partial and gradual relaxation of the lockdown in June led to a slight revival of sales, though retail shops were largely empty. Customer preferred to either order online, or researched competitive models online and made a quick visit to a retail shop to buy the selected model. The overall market in the first half of 2020 was just around 40% of the same period of 2019. The months of March to June generally account for almost 60% of the annual sales.

5 Brazil
ABRAVA’s Statistics Department and its associates estimated that a large decline in RAC production occurred during the period spanning January to May 2020. Single-splits dominate the Brazilian market. The drop in family income and the sharp increase in the number of unemployed people are expected to reduce consumption of single-split systems. Therefore, itis forecast that in 2020, single-splits will be affected by a decrease of around 35%, the biggest drop ever in ABRAVA’s history.
