When France’s President Emmanuel Macron rose to power in May 2017, he placed the environment at the heart of his agenda. Eighteen months later, anger over those policies stoked violent protests led by the ‘Gilets Jaunes’, the Yellow Vest Movement. Rioters torched cars and buildings in Paris and other parts of the country in protests caused partly by higher fuel taxes which the government says are needed to fight climate change.
