ATW heat pump outdoor units are divided into monobloc and split systems. Monobloc is the general name for ATW heat pump systems that do not require the installation of refrigerant piping. Some have an independent hydro unit, while others have the hydro unit integrated in the outdoor unit. Monobloc-type ATW heat pump systems offer easy installation and are accepted in Germany and the United Kingdom. In contrast, split systems require refrigerant piping installation, and typically both a refrigerant piping contractor and a plumbing contractor will perform the installation work. There is no major difference in the efficiency of monobloc and split systems.
