1. New A2L Refrigerant Regulation in Spain
At the end of 2018, the Spanish government published a law establishing urgent measures to foster the economy in the Spanish industry and commerce sectors. This law comprises a transitory provision related to the conditions under which equipment containing A2L mildly flammable refrigerants such as R32, R452B and hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) is installed, and eases the installation of this type of equipment, according to the European Standard EN 378: Refrigerating systems and heat pumps – Safety and environmental requirements.

2. 2018 AC Market Trends in the Southern Hemisphere – Africa
After suffering challenging weather conditions and stagnant economies for many years, the African RAC market started to bounce back and has seen 10% growth in 2018, partly because of hotter weather than in 2017. Nigeria, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, and South Africa are the major markets in this region. Local markets have been filled with made-in-China RACs, which are dominated by non-inverter models. During the period from January to October 2018, Chinese manufacturers have exported more than 2.97 million units of RACs to Africa, indicating 2.9% growth year on year.

3. Sifa 2018 in Lyon — A Great Success
Lyon is known as France’s ‘capital of refrigeration’, and lived up to its reputation. For the first time, Sifa, a leading exhibition dedicated to refrigeration and air conditioning technologies and encompassing commercial refrigeration, industrial refrigeration, air conditioning, and the cold chain, was held in Lyon on November 28–29, 2018, and attracted a record number of visitors. Visitors were able to meet with a record 120 exhibitors from all sectors: manufacturers and distributors of components, finished products, tools and accessories, refrigerants, and service providers.

4. Xiaomi Purchases Shares of TCL Group
On January 6, 2019, TCL Group announced that Xiaomi Group strategically invested in TCL Group. Cooperation between the two parties will enable Xiaomi Group to gain an edge in the supply of other major household electrical appliances such as TV sets, air conditioners, and washing machines. The two companies have businesses that complement each other.  Xiaomi is strong in product definition, R&D, and design, as well as advanced Internet thinking. TCL has a very rich supply chain, production experience, and is showing great competitiveness in the semiconductor display business.

5. Daikin and Univ. of Tokyo Enter Into Industry-University Co-creation Project
On December 17, 2018, Daikin announced that the company has signed an agreement with the University of Tokyo concerning an Industry University Co-creation Project that is intended to promote not only collaborative research and personnel interchanges, but also collaborative operations with venture enterprises related to the University of Tokyo at a higher level.  As an air conditioner manufacturer operating its business globally, Daikin has developed new technologies and service solutions by foreseeing the future of the air conditioning business, is spearheading new business models by presenting the open innovation scheme, and positively promotes industry-university collaborations.
