1. Smart Appliances Evolution Showcased at CES 2019
CES 2019, the international consumer electronics show, was held from January 8 to 11 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the United States. CES 2019 featured hot topics: fifth generation (5G) and Internet of Things (IoT); advertising, entertainment, and content; automotive; blockchain; health and wellness; home and family; immersive entertainment; product design and manufacturing; robotics and machine intelligence; sports; and startups. Among these topics, JARN reports on the exhibits of home appliance manufacturers focusing on smart products using the latest technologies such as AI and IoT.

2. 2018 AC Market Trends in the Southern Hemisphere – Australia
The 2018 Australian room air conditioner (RAC) market including window and portable types, showed demand reaching 872,000 units, dropping by 7.8% year on year; packaged air conditioners (PACs) amounted to 111,000 units, falling by 6.3% year on year. Due to some of the strictest energy efficiency regulations in the world, almost all air conditioners in Australia adopt inverter technology. R32 refrigerant with a low global warming potential (GWP) is also becoming the main refrigerant thanks to its environmental performance. Mini-VRFs are significantly increasing their share of the VRF market and are competing with this type of PACs and RACs. Mini-VRFs for residential applications account for more than 40% of all VRFs.

3. Arkema Satisfying Customers with Lower GWP Refrigerants
At the International Symposium on New Refrigerants and Environmental Technology (Kobe Symposium) held in December 2018 in Japan, Sarah Kim, Ph. D., Research Scientist, Fluorochemicals R&D, Arkema, made a presentation titled ‘Flammability and Risk Assessment of Low Environmental Impact Refrigerants for R134a and R404A Replacement’. JARN interviewed Dr. Kim to hear more about her presentation.

4. Chinese Brands Show Strong Performance in Online Sales
Chinese online sales platforms for household electrical appliances are dominated by JD.com, T-mall, and Suning within a stable market pattern. In the first half of 2018, JD.com seized a 60.5% market share, and Tmall and Suning divided the rest. According to the latest issue of Household Electrical Appliances Online Purchase Report, Chinese brands have seen strong online sales performance with a lower presence of foreign brands in the first half of 2018.

5. MHI Agreement Concluded to form JV with Major Local Partner in Turkey
On January 31, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Thermal Systems concluded an agreement with the shareholders of Form VRF Sistemleri Sanayi ve Ticaret, a company within the Form Group. The aim of the JV is to strengthen the sales network in Turkey through close cooperation between the two corporate groups, and substantially increase their market share in the country, for MHI Thermal Systems’ split-type residential air conditioners and packaged air conditioners (PACs), and variable refrigerant flow (VRF) multi-air conditioning systems.
