1. Where Is Japanese Electrical Appliance Industry Headed?
Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry has acquired the venerable Japanese home appliance and consumer electronics brand Sharp. As this illustrates, Chinese and Taiwanese companies have been increasing their presence in the home appliance and electronics industry.
Teaming up with Japan-based Sharp may be a quick way for Hon Hai to get ahead in technologies like organic electroluminescence (EL) displays and compete against the Korean giants Samsung and LG.

2. LG Gaining Ground in the U.S. VRF Market
During the 2016 AHR Expo, JARN interviewed Kevin McNamara, senior vice president, sales and operations, LG’s U.S. Air Conditioning Systems business, to hear about its business strategies focusing on variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems.

3. Emerson Grows Stronger Engagement with Partners in Asia
Emerson Climate Technologies held the 2016 Channel Partner Conference in Hua Hin, Thailand from March 29 to 30, with a theme of Stronger Engagement with Partners. Over 100 partners from Southeast and North Asia attended the conference. The management of Emerson Asia opened the event, sharing key industry trends and identifying market approaches to create opportunities for continued strong growth.

4. Technical Note--Chillers: Air-cooled vs Water-cooled
The air-cooled chiller for air conditioning market continues to grow, and with so does the size of project using air-cooled chillers. In the past, air-cooled chillers were mostly used for small/medium capacity applications below 600 tons. Today, it is not uncommon to see chilled water applications above 1,000 tons using multiple air-cooled chillers. On another front, a water-cooled chiller including scroll, screw, and centrifugal chillers is used not only for air conditioning but industrial applications with wide capacity ranges from approximately 20 tons to large 6,000 tons.

5. Africa Accounts for 20% of Overseas Visitors to Canton Fair
The 119th edition of the Canton Fair took place from April 15 to 19. According to the official press release of the Canton Fair, 43,306 purchasers visited the fair on the first day, showing 2.9% year-on-year growth. It is noteworthy that 8,109 African purchasers visited the fair on the same day. A great deal of promotion took place during this edition of the fair in order to boost cooperation with African countries, and to further explore the African market.
