* The 2013 Overview - World Chiller and Large AC Market
According to BSRIA, global chiller market scale was US$ 8.5 billion in 2013, a 2.8% increase from 2012. By chiller type, centrifugal chillers came to US$ 2.2 billion; reciprocating, screw, and scroll chillers reached US$ 5.3 billion; and absorption chillers over 350 kW were US$ 974 million in 2013. On the other hand, the market size of air-side products was nearly US$ 6.9 billion, a 5.0% increase from 2012.

1. Chillventa 2014 Signals a Bright Outlook for the European Market
Chillventa 2014 was held in Nuremberg, Germany, from October 14 to 16. JARN reporters interviewed representatives of many top HVAC&R manufacturers and their positive hopes for the 2014 European market were palpable. A spokesperson from one manufacturer said, “In the first half of this year, growth slowed in emerging markets and some regions experienced contractions. However, while the economy in Europe remains challenging, the air conditioner market is maintaining growth on par with the previous year, and there are signs of growth in the second half of the year. Therefore, we may see annual growth of 5%.”

2. Emerson Breaks Ground on HVAC&R Innovation Center
On October 17, Emerson Climate Technologies broke ground on its US$ 35 million innovation center on the University of Dayton campus. The new Emerson Innovation Center, also referred to as ‘The Helix’, is slated to open in late 2015. “The needs of the markets we serve are changing dramatically, and the requirements for our business to innovate in the ‘new’ world of information technology and connectivity are much greater and much more challenging than ever. And we see The Helix as a hub where academic researchers and industry professionals can jointly test ideas and concepts at the system level in our real-world environments,” said Ed Purvis, executive vice president, Emerson Climate Technologies.

3. Industry Leaders Predict Essential Redefinition of HVAC&R in 20 years
October saw the first-ever Eurovent Summit taking place in Berlin, Germany, with more than 320 industry representatives from around the globe elaborating on key issues ranging from energy efficiency to air quality. Themed ‘HVAC&R Rethought’, 38 different working sessions and events have led to lively discussions with guests such as EU Commissioner Connie Hedegaard, high association representatives and renowned academics - resulting in many thought-provoking results.

5. Sanhua Celebrates 30th Anniversary and New Production Base
Sanhua organized a celebration for its 30th anniversary, along with the opening of its third production base at an investment of RMB 1.5 billion (US$ 245 million), at Xinchang, Zhejiang Province, on October 15. More than 100 representatives from government, industry associations, universities, and research institutions attended the event together with media, strategic suppliers, and Sanhua employees.
