* 2013 ATW Market Overview
As steps to prevent global warming take on added urgency, expectations are rising for the potential benefit offered by heat pumps, which are recognized as energy-efficient devices that use renewable energy. Energy-saving ATWs have established their position as an environmentally friendly product in the Japanese and European markets. Environmental awareness has also been growing in China recently, and demand for ATWs is seeing explosive growth. The 2013 global ATW market increased 19.1% year on year to 1.63 million units.

1. AC Demand Loses Momentum from Emerging Markets
The world air conditioner market in the first half of 2014 slowed slightly compared with the same period of 2013, ending on a less-than- satisfying note. Slowing economic growth in emerging markets as well as political instability and regional conflict in some countries has dealt a blow to the air conditioner market.

2. UTC Building & Industrial Systems to Acquire CIAT
Upon completion of this acquisition, UTC Building & Industrial Systems intends to maintain and grow the CIAT brand. The addition of CIAT enlarges UTC Building & Industrial Systems’ existing international HVAC portfolio which includes Carrier and Toshiba. In addition, UTC Building & Industrial Systems plans to reinforce and expand CIAT’s global network of distribution channels as well as its existing service offering

3. AHRI Celebrates Third Anniversary of Industry-first VRF Certification Program
AHRI is celebrating the third anniversary of the VRF certification program, which offers the broadest scope in the industry, and includes 50 Hz and 60 Hz models of VRF multi-split air conditioners, heat pumps, and heat recovery systems. Since the program began, it has grown steadily to include nine manufacturer participants and 1,367 certified models.

4. Hisense Enhances Brand Power with Leading Technologies
In 2005, Qingdao Hisense, a renowned Chinese household electrical appliances manufacturer, acquired Guangdong Kelon in the largest M&A in the history of the Chinese household appliances industry. How has the company and its air conditioner business developed in the nine years since the acquisition? JARN recently visited Hisense headquarters and interviewed Dr. Lin Lan, executive vice president of Hisense Group, and Dr. Wang Zhigang, vice general manager of Hisense Kelon, to find out.

5. Tetsuji Okada Assumes Presidency of JRAIA
At the General Assembly of the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA) held on June 6, 2014, Tetsuji Okada was elected the new president of JRAIA. Before this appointment, Mr. Okada was stationed in Europe for four years in positions including general manager at Mitsubishi Electric Europe’s office in Brussels, Belgium, and as vice president of the company’s air conditioning factory in Scotland. In mid-July, a JARN reporter paid a visit to Mr. Okada at JRAIA to learn about his ambitions as president.
