1. California’s Regulation of HFCs
On December 10, 2020, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved rules on regulating HFCs with high GWP that are used as refrigerant (see the January 2021 regular issue of JARN).  Among stationary air conditioners, CARB mandates that new room air conditioners (RACs) and dehumidifiers manufactured after January 1, 2023, use refrigerant with a GWP of 750 or below. Meanwhile, taking into account the mildly flammable nature of next-generation refrigerants and the need to amend building codes to enable their use, respective regulations on other air conditioning equipment for residential and commercial use will take effect at the beginning of 2025, and at the beginning of 2026 for variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems.
