2.11 AFRICA: Nigeria
2018/01/22
According to the IMF, Nigeria’s GDP growth rate was a -1.6% in 2016, dragged down by the collapse of oil prices. The growth rate of the country’s manufacturing industry, which largely relies on imports of raw materials, dropped sharply due to a shortage of foreign currency. The foreign currency problem appears to be abating, and GDP growth in 2017 is forecast to record a 0.8%.

The size of the Nigerian air conditioner market was 596,000 units in 2017. Of this, RACs accounted for 557,000 units.

The major air conditioner companies in Nigeria include Carrier, Panasonic, Chigo, Daikin, JCI, LG, Midea, Haier, Samsung, and Trane. Manufacturers such as Midea, Haier, LG, Samsung, Chigo, and TCL export their air conditioners from China to Nigeria and regard it as an important market in West Africa.
