2.9 MIDDLE EAST
2018/01/21
The Middle Eastern market has not yet escaped from stagnant growth, with the economy hurt by falling oil prices and political instability. According to the IMF, economic growth rates in the all major Middle Eastern countries decreased in 2017 compared with 2016: Saudi Arabia decreased to 0.1% in 2017 from 1.7% in 2016, United Arab Emirates (UAE) decreased to 1.3% from 3.0%, Iran decreased to 3.8% from 12.5%, and Iraq decreased to 2.9% from 11.0%.

The Middle Eastern air conditioner market also showed a declining trend in 2017 compared with 2016, recording sales of about 4.7 million units.

In the desert areas of the Middle East, where high temperatures can top 50oC, air conditioners are a necessity. During most of the year, air conditioners are often run all day and night, shortening the product lifespan. When an air conditioner breaks down, it must be replaced immediately. Not surprisingly, there is a large replacement market. Even when the economy is stagnant and income falls, users must still purchase air conditioners. This means that products with cheap prices and strong cooling performance move quickly regardless of economic conditions. The most popular RAC cooling classes are 18,000 BTU/h and 24,000 BTU/h.
