2.8 OCEANIA: Australia
2018/01/21
Continuing from 2016, the 2017 Australian air conditioner market showed steady growth, supported by higher immigration numbers and a housing construction boom driven by Chinese investment.

The RAC market including window and portable types recorded sales of 946,000 units, marking 20% higher growth compared with the previous year. Meanwhile, PACs did not see as strong of growth as RACs, but still experienced 20% year-on year growth in 2017.

Single-split RACs are sold at appliance store chains including Harvey Norman and Bing Lee as well as big box retailers including Myer, Kmart, and Big W. These retail channels account for 60% of all RAC sales. Professional air conditioner stores are another channel that mainly handles PAC and VRF units but also sells a considerable number of RAC units that require construction to install. Manufacturers adjust their sales strategy depending on the channel. Because the home construction boom has been a driver of air conditioner market growth, the professional channel grew significantly while the retail channel was relatively weak in 2017.
