2.3 S.E. ASIA: The Philippines
2018/01/21
JARN estimates the Philippines air conditioner market scale at about 888,000 units in 2017, an increase of 9.7% compared with 2016.

With a U.S. style air conditioner culture, an expanding middle class, and an air conditioner penetration rate of 7%, the market is forecast to expand at an increasingly fast rate in the near term.

Due to the tropical weather, cooling-only air conditioners are overwhelmingly popular in the country. Unlike many other countries in

Southeast Asia, cost-efficient window units dominate the market, accounting for 65%, which is exceptionally high in Southeast Asia.

The high cost of installation is one factor hampering the penetration of split units in the country. Japanese manufacturers promote split air conditioners as replacements for window-type units. To encourage demand for energy-saving products in the Philippines, Japanese manufacturers have been reaching out to local design institutions to spread information on the best ways of selecting and operating energy-saving air conditioners right from the building design stage. Demand for splits has been increasing accordingly, and now accounts for 35% of the market.
