2.3 S.E. ASIA: Malaysia
2018/01/21
The Malaysian RAC market in 2017 showed a significant decrease due to bad weather. This decrease was almost the same as in Thailand and Indonesia. In particular, a sales drop in May and June greatly affected the market.

The Malaysian air conditioner market in 2017 recorded 737,000 units, showing a 19.7% decrease compared with 2016.

Split types dominate the market and the volume of window units is negligible. Non-inverter type cooling-only air conditioners in the range of 9,000-12,000 BTU/h (2.6-3.5 kW) are the main sellers. Inverter air conditioners make up about 15% of the RAC market.

Production Base

The largest local producer is Panasonic. It has been producing air conditioners in Southeast Asian countries, with its Malaysian factory as its main production base of RACs and PACs with a total capacity of around 1 million units per year, mostly destined for overseas markets.
