Copper Price Rises
2018/01/21
Copper remained in short supply in China, partially due to a growing manufacturing industry. In December 2017, both copper supply and demand stakeholders met in Shanghai to negotiate the price of copper concentrate in 2018. As there was great divergence between the two parties over treatment charges, a final agreement may not be reached until early 2018.

Judging from the availability of scrap copper, China plans to implement seven bans on imports by the end of 2018. At present, approval systems for environmental protection are resulting in a substantial reduction in the volume of scrap copper imports. It is estimated that scrap copper imports dropped by 300,000 to 400,000 tons in 2017.

Copper prices are increasing

Codelco, a Chilean copper producer, is expected set its 2018 term premiums for China at US$ 75 per ton, up by US$ 3 per ton from 2017, indicating that copper consumption in China is still strong.
