Panasonic Aiming at Expanding Gas AC Business in Latin America
2017/11/26
The market for air conditioning systems using gas as an energy source such as gas-fired absorption chillers and gas heat pumps (GHPs) is limited, and is restricted to areas with an unstable supply and high electricity tariffs due to insufficient power infrastructure.

According to the Japan Petroleum Energy Center (JPEC) report published in March 2015, Brazil is the third largest energy consumer country in the Americas after the United States and Canada and the eighth largest in the world. At the same time, Brazil is the tenth largest energy resources producer in the world, with a low energy import de-pendency rate of under 15%.

However, for natural gas that serves as a power source for gas-fired absorption chillers and GHPs, Brazil is becoming a net importing country, despite boasting the second proven reserves in South America after Venezuela. Therefore, besides securing stable natural gas through imports, the country is also cultivating domestic gas fields and expanding its pipelines.
