3.4 ITALY
2017/11/26
Reported by Centro Studi Galileo, Italy
Since 2014, the Italian market has shown small, yet constant growth in all sectors of the industry, as well as in the air conditioning and refrigeration (AC&R) market. There are two main factors that have driven growth in this sector: energy incentives from Europe and from the Italian government, in particular the phase-out program of all commonly-used refrigerants, and the introduction of new, alternative refrigerants.

It must be borne in mind that the Italian AC&R market is different from the Far Eastern and South Asian ones. The most widely used method of distribution of heat and cold in Italy, for instance, is through water; this requires high usage of chillers and heat pumps, both in civil and industrial buildings. There are many reasons for this preferred method; the most relevant are firstly the strong tradition of heating systems based on gas boilers and hot water for all kinds of heating in buildings and, secondly, the large number of companies with skilled employees specialized in this type of work. Regarding large direct-expansion (DX) systems, variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems in general, Italy has a smaller number of skilled workers and companies specialized in the installation of these systems, although their number is rapidly increasing.
