3|4 EUROPE
2017/09/22
The European cold chain market in 2016 grew about 4% in terms of the average value of all regions. The main contributors to growth included the advances of supermarkets, the increasing quantity of frozen foods traded by international manufacturers, and increasing exports of perishables and processed foods. In particular, overall growth was bolstered by advances in new types of food retailing such as fast foods and diversified food retail systems. Some countries are positively adopting refrigeration equipment that is capable of retaining the food quality through the stages from production and storage to transport, avoiding freezing processes affecting the appearance and taste of foodstuffs.

By product type, transport refrigeration plus refrigerators and freezers account for about 35% of the total refrigeration equipment market. On a per-application basis, food service and retailing businesses account for about 50% of the total. In transport refrigeration, rising exports of perishables, herbs, and pharmaceuticals are supporting the market, with an over 30% share.
