Thermal Storage Expected to Play a Major Role in Energy Saving
2017/08/26
Forecast for Thermal Storage

Although thermal storage may sound unfamiliar, it is being used very close to us.

When you have purchased perishables, a shop assistant will put a cold pack into your bag so that the foodstuffs will not become warm while you are going home. In Japan, this is often experienced in daily living. In this case, when the cold pack is frozen, it causes a phase transition or phase change from the liquid state to the solid state and when it returns to the original state, it ab-sorbs the surrounding heat, retaining food freshness over a relatively long period.

Another example illustrates this effect: on summer nights when the room temperature is hot, the room needs to be cooled despite the low outside temperature. High temperatures occur in rooms because buildings absorb solar heat in the daytime, and this heat diffuses into the rooms at night. In this case, the building structure serves as a hot pack releasing the heat, in contrast to a cold pack absorbing the heat.
