7.2 SCREW/CENTRIFUGAL

There are currently two types of large refrigeration compressors as shown in Fig.1: centrifugal and screw compressors.
 
Centrifugal compressors have a broad capacity range and are commonly used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment as well as for a process cooling in industrial applications.
 
Screw compressors have high-lift capability and are widely used not only for comfort cooling/heating in HVAC systems but also for heat pumps and refrigeration applications in industrial contexts.
 
The capacities of scroll compressors have also been extended recently, but are not yet large enough to cover capacities comparable to those of centrifugal and screw compressors.
