-- Interview with Steve Kujak of Ingersoll Rand
At the 2017 AHR Expo held in Las Vegas, the United States, Trane, an Ingersoll Rand brand, highlighted the Series S CenTraVac centrifugal chiller adopting R514A refrigerant that is a smaller capacity unit than the CenTraVac adopting hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant R1233zd(E).
During his interview with JARN, Steve Kujak, director of Next-Generation Refrigerant Research at Ingersoll Rand, explained, “R514A is an non-flammable azeotropic refrigerant blend that contains R1336mzz(Z) and R1130(E). R514A is a low-pressure refrigerant with an ultra-low global warming potential (GWP) of less than 2. It has an ASHRAE classification of B1. R514A has a design that is compatible with R123 designs and has the same high efficiency characteristics as R123.” He added that “R500 series refrigerants, since they are azeotropic, act like single-component refrigerants and servicing and handling practices do not change.
