According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), one-third of the food produced in the world, some 1.3 billion tons, is wasted every year. Meanwhile, one in nine people suffer from malnutrition.
This problem was highlighted in the January 2016 issue of JARN, and in this issue we will turn a light on some of the issues facing supermarkets and convenience stores, which are an integral part of the retail food sector.
Supermarket Trade Show
Every year in February, the Supermarket Trade Show is held in Tokyo or neighboring Chiba Prefecture. This year it was held at Makuhari Messe convention center in Chiba and attracted a total of more than 2,000 exhibiting companies and groups from all over Japan and the world. Exhibitors offered free samples of food and drinks for the many visitors (see p. 54).
