Trends in the Developing Countries
Because Japanese manufacturers lead the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) market, R410A has been universally adopted as a refrigerant for VRF systems in both developing and developed countries. Regulation of air conditioners using hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) in the room air conditioner (RAC) and packaged air conditioner (PAC) markets for the surrounding regions of the European Union (EU) and for Southeast Asia has been remarkable, whereas the market ratio of R22 air conditioners in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America still occupies about 90%.
Major Chinese manufacturers currently export a large number of finished air conditioning products and components using R22, R410A, and even R32 on an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) basis to developing countries. Should the Chinese government decide to adopt propane (R290) and R32 for RACs and PACs, respectively, as HCFC refrigerant alternatives as originally planned, the decision would impact the global air conditioner market tremendously. Consequently, the industry is closely monitoring China’s decision on next-generation refrigerants.
