The York brand of Johnson Controls (JCI), the leader in air-cooled chillers with variable-speed drive (VSD) compressors, introduces the York YVFA free-cooling air-cooled screw chiller.
The YVFA free-cooling chiller addresses the concerns of the building owner by reducing annual energy use by 30% with payback in as little as two years. Traditional free-cooling chillers use fixed-speed compressors that simply shut off when ambient temperatures are low, providing savings only when the compressors are completely off. JCI sought to do better; developing a Hybrid Mode control technology that optimizes energy use year-round by adjusting the compressor speed and condenser fans to achieve the lowest possible energy consumption at all ambient conditions. Hybrid Mode uses free-cooling coils to reduce the mechanical load at a much higher temperature; the VSD compressors reduce speed and energy use throughout more of the year.
