World Chiller and Large AC Market: 1. The 2015 Overview
Central air conditioner chiller systems consist of a heat source chiller and air-side equipment such as air handling units (AHUs) and fan coil units (FCUs) as well as pumps to convey chilled and cooling water, water pipes, cooling towers to dissipate heat outdoors, and other equipment.
The total cost for a chiller system can vary widely depending on the individual systems and the application. World demand for air-side AHUs and FCUs combined is about the same as demand for chillers on a value basis, and AHUs account for around 70% of this. In the U.S. market where ducted air conditioning is mainstream, total demand for air-side equipment on a value basis exceeds total chiller demand. Chillers, however, are the main product in central air conditioning systems and affect the amount of energy consumption of the entire system. Chillers are also directly tied to environmental problems including refrigerant issues.
