Nigeria: temperature-controlled rail service for fruit and veg
2016/11/14
November 11, 2016
Dutsen Wai, Nigeria: A perishable produce rail service starts this week transporting goods from the North to the southern part of the country using returnable plastic crates in temperature-controlled wagons, the Daily Trust newspaper reports.

This new system is the result of partnership between Growth and Employment in States - Wholesale and Retail Trade and Connect Rail Services.

The service will not only improve the quality of tomatoes and other fresh perishables supplied from the north to the south but also increase income for small holder farms from lover post-harvest losses.

Richard Ogundele, group intervention manager, Growth and Employment in States, said, “This is a national game changer that will lead to massive systemic changes, as the utilisation of returnable plastic crates in the supply chain will ensure quality produce and increased incomes, hence sustaining the gains of early harvesting.”
