Myanmar’s air conditioner market had a scale of only 262,000 units in 2015. The percentage of the population that owns an air conditioner is still low.
With a population of approximately 50 million and an average age about 27, Myanmar’s middle class is likely to grow. Myanmar also has a tropical monsoon climate and therefore a high average temperature. For these reasons, Myanmar’s potential air conditioner demand is thought to be large.
With its large pool of cheap labor and industrious national character, the country is also expected to play a strategic role as a parts supply base for air conditioner factories in neighboring Thailand.
Most air conditioners used in the country are RACs in the economically priced segment. As is the case in many other countries, Myanmar’s RAC market is dominated by cost-competitive products from China. According to China Customs, a total of almost 185,000 units of RACs exported from China were imported into Myanmar in 2015.
