Impacted by currency depreciation and challenging weather conditions, sales of air conditioners in Malaysia were more than 0.8 million units in 2015. RACs showed a 30% year on year decrease while sales of PACs were flat. Every August, RAC manufacturers stage a Malaysian mega sales campaign, during which they offer air conditioners at special prices, but in 2015 this campaign did not generate an increase in sales.
Non-inverter type cooling-only air conditioners in the range of 9,000-12,000 BTU/h (2.6-3.5 kW) are the main sellers. Inverter air conditioners make up about 20% of the market. Ductless split types dominate the market and the volume of window units is negligible.
LG, Panasonic, and York lead the market. Samsung and Daikin also focuses on Malaysia. Hitachi employs a high-end strategy in the country.
