8.1 Technological Trends: 8.1 Development of Scroll Compressor and Their Transition

In the spring of 1983 some 30 years ago, Hitachi (currently Johnson Controls-Hitachi Air Conditioning but referred to here as Hitachi) independently commercialized a positive-displacement-type scroll compressor featuring a new design. Hitachi incorporated it into a packaged air conditioner and launched it in the market as the world’s first scroll air conditioner.
A scroll compressor consists of a pair of scroll laps having the same shape. It continuously performs compression, causes less leakage between the compression chambers, and enables highly efficient quiet operation. Moreover, since it has fewer components and the slip velocity of the sliding section is small, higher reliability can be expected.
