Reported by the Association of European Refrigeration Component Manufacturers (ASERCOM)
The European refrigeration compressor market is driven to a large extent by the new F-gas regulation. Future reductions and restrictions of refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP) lead to new low GWP refrigerants. One of the concerns of the industry is the proliferation of those. For compressor and components manufacturers it is important to limit the number of new refrigerants, as they have to qualify their products accordingly. A stronger trend towards natural refrigerants such as CO2 and hydrocarbons, and ammonia in the industrial area, is seen.
The move to future proof natural refrigerants results in other challenges coming from the ATEX directive and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) - more use of flammable refrigerants requires different explosion protection measures and can result in a class move within PED.
